Complete mobility: Siemens Mobility at Modern Railways 2009

Further supporting Chinese railway industry with its globally unique concept

Shanghai, 26 June 2009

From June 22nd - 25th, 2009, Siemens Mobility Division will present its innovative wide range of efficient infrastructure solutions for public and freight transport as well as logistics services at The 9th China International Exhibition on Modern Railway Equipment & Technologies (Modern Railways 2009), the trade fair focusing on mainline and regional rail transport systems taking place in Shanghai. Siemens will not only showcase its strong competence and its leading position as a single source supplier and system integrator, but also present its globally unique concept “Complete mobility”. With this “Complete mobility” approach, Siemens is able to intelligently network different transportation systems with each other so that people and goods can be conveyed to their destination quickly, safely and with minimal harm to the environment.

Mobility is the biggest challenge when it comes to ensuring sustainable growth for the future and consequently increasing the quality life – this is especially the case for China. As an active, competent business partner contributing to China’s success for over 110 years with its innovative products and solutions, Siemens gives the answers for the Chinese mobility challenges with its holistic “Complete mobility” approach.  At the Modern Railways 2009, Siemens will introduce this globally unique concept. Siemens is the only company to adopt such an integrated approach so far because it has the necessary expertise to do so: for everything from operations control systems for rail and road traffic through traction power supply and rolling stock for mass transit, regional rail and mainline services to airport logistics and postal automation systems. Thus the Division has an unbeatable unique selling point: no other player anywhere in the world can offer such a comprehensive portfolio of products and services ranging across so many different sectors.

Motor of innovations for the railway industry                                                                                                        Siemens will once again take advantage of Modern Railways to underscore its role as motor of innovations for the railway industry and demonstrate this by presenting a number of products, solutions and technologies at its stand.

The “Rolling stock Evolution Wall” at the entrance of the Siemens stand will recapitulate the highlights of the company’s around 140-year evolution history of Siemens rail vehicles with a number of historical pictures. The wall demonstrates the strong competence of Siemens in the field of railway transportation as well as its vital role in the innovation and the development of the world’s rail industry.

By exhibiting Velaro RUS model, Siemens will highlight the world success of its “Velaro” Platform for High-speed rail travel. “Velaro” is a Siemens platform for high-speed trains and a development which began with the ICE 3 for Deutsche Bahn (DB AG). The Spanish version of the Velaro was successfully put into operation in June 2007, and reached speeds over 400 km/h during test trips in Spain, which makes it the fastest series-production high-speed train in the world. The Russian version, Velaro RUS, which was handed over to the Russian Railways (RZD) at the end of 2008, is scheduled to start operating between Moscow and St. Petersburg at the end of 2009. With a consumption of only 0.33 litres per seat for every 100 Kilometres travelled, the Velaro is also the most environmental friendly high speed train on the market.

Siemens is also presenting Desiro UK, the regional train family for Great Britain that has been adapted to the British network with its high-density railway lines and specific “Safety Case“ requirements.  The Desiro UK has already been the recipient of several awards, including the Golden Spanner Award from Modern Railways Magazine, which it has received three times for reliability, and the Rail Business Award of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). The British Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) also named the Class 185 and Class 360/2 Desiro UK as the most reliable trains that are currently running on the railways in the country.

Another eye-catching model is the world-record breaking locomotive. Based on Siemens Eurosprinter locomotive platform, it is a Class ES64U4 multi-system electric locomotive that set the new world record with the travelling speed of 357 kilometers per hour in September 2006. As a modern locomotive platform supporting four systems, the Eurosprinter opens up new perspectives in interoperable passenger and freight transport.

Siprotec@ 7ST63, the numerical protection relay, is substation secondary protection equipment in AC traction power supply system. It integrates protection, control, and measurement and automation functions together, with the features of quick responding, and being high universal. The relay possesses all functions required by overhead contact line. The device has a good reference in America, Australia, many countries in Asia and Europe.

In this exhibition, Siemens will demonstrate three newly-developed signalling products including End Position Detector of types EPD-C and EPD-S, S 800N Internal Locking Electric Point Machine and LED 210 Signal Light Units.  EPD-C and EPD-S can safeguard the point operation by fulfilling a precise and real time detection of point blades. Following the successful applications of S 700 K-C electric point machines, Siemens developed another two types of electric point machines in the light of the market development – S 800N internal locking electric point machine and S 700 V-C sleeper electric point machine, being used to operate points reliably and safely. LED 210 signal light unit is a new type of signalling product with long service life, and can replace traditional multi-lens colour light signals. All the three products have the common features of modular design, maintenance-free, low maintenance cost and long service life.  In addition, Siemens will also present the S 21 balise. The Siemens’ balise system is able to perform the track-to-train communication with high reliability and safety, and has many successful references in both Europe and China.

“Green Mobility” is one focus Siemens will emphasize at the exhibition. With the energy-efficient technologies for long-term environmental compatibility, Siemens provides the transportation and logistics solutions designed for a sustainable business environment throughout all stages of the lifecycle.

Further supporting Chinese railway industry                                                                                                           For the past over 100 years, Siemens has successfully supported the railway infrastructure development and modernization throughout China. “Recent years witnessed the remarkable development of the Chinese railway industry, and Siemens is delighted and honoured to experience these great changes together with the country and Chinese people. But the need for modern mobility solutions is still growing in China to keep up with its economic boom. With our state-of-the-art technologies and solutions as presented at Modern Railways 2009, we will continue to contribute our utmost to answer China’s transportation and logistics challenges”, said Mr. Joachim Kraege, Senior Vice President of Siemens Ltd., China and General Manager of Mobility Division.
